“we are stones and shadows“ 1914 – 1918 memories of war in Friuli and Venezia Giulia
Before the international community began numbering major conflicts, the war that ravaged Europe from 1914 – 1918 was – in all its dramatic simplicity – the Great War, Grosser Krieg, Grande Guerra, Grande Guerre. It become a World War when the United States decided to intervene against the central Empires. But the definition of “world” contains – and does not exclude – the individual as everyone – it has been written – soldiers and civilians alike, last a world: their own. In these lands made of borders and microcosms, the memories of these vanished worlds survive in the places, in the atmospheres and the stories that have become part of the history that the regions of Friuli and Venezia Giulia, puts together and develops these fragments of memories to mark the centenary of a War which, for Trieste and other lands belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire began in 1914.
Produced by the Press Office – television Productions – of the Presidency of the Regional Government of Friuli Venezia Giulia – the documentary film was made with the participation of Italian and foreign museums as well as historians and Italian, Slovenian and Austrian cultural organizations.
